The simplest way to express who we are at St. Paul Lutheran Church is this: We are Jesus people. Similar to the first Christians who agreed on one very simple creed.... Jesus is Lord! We are a community of Word and Sacrament. What does this mean? (We ask that a lot as Lutheran Christians!) Well... we share a common faith with other Christians who affirm the Bible as sacred Scripture and accept the ancient creeds as accurate summaries of our faith. God's Holy Spirit is active in scripture, both in its understanding and proclamation (Word); through the living waters of Holy Baptism (Sacrament); and truly present in the meal, Holy Communion (Sacrament). As Lutheran Christians, we believe that salvation is by God's grace through faith alone. We believe in the Triune God - God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. We acknowledge one God in these three expressions. We believe that God the Father is the Creator of all that exists, and that God continues to be active in the lives of people today. God is passionate about God's creation, loves it deeply, and desires that our lives be filled with love and joy. We believe that while God has revealed God's self in many ways throughout history, God is most fully known in Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ, born of a virgin, is fully God and fully human. The most important event in Christian history is the death and resurrection of Jesus. On the cross God is there, hidden in weakness, vulnerability and suffering. In the cross we learn that we do not need to find God by being good or holy. We believe that the Bible is the living Work of God. It is the primary means by which God's Spirit enters our lives, calling us to repentance and faith. When we hear God's Word, God breaks into our lives shattering old ways and creating new life, new values and new commitment. We believe that God has chosen to work through the water of baptism. When water and God's Word come together and touch the life of a child or adult, we are born again, incorporated into Christ, into his body, the Church. By grace, we receive God's forgiveness through Baptism, and are given the gift of God's Holy Spirit. In baptism, especially infant baptism, we affirm that God chooses us - We do not choose God. He felt his calling to ministry through tragic accidents and difficult times where God's grace was powerful in his life, and now wants to share that message of love with others in need. Pastor Nate graduated from Monrovia High School in 2004. He completed his B.A. in Communications from Trinity Lutheran College in 2010 along with a year studying Spanish at La Universidad Autonoma de Guadalajara. He finished a M.Div. degree through Pacifica Lutheran Theological Seminary (PLTS) in 2014, and was subsequently called to Clairemont Lutheran Church in San Diego where he served as Associate Pastor for five years. In 2009, he was married to the love of his life. They have two daughters who keep him humble, a four year old boy and they are expecting their fourth child, a baby girl, in April 2025. He likes to spend time with family, playing, reading, watching movies, traveling, and if possible go dancing! He likes to exercise regularly and eat as healthy as possible. He is also a rapper making Christian music for church and other gatherings! You can find him online on any music platform under Pastor Nate. Born in Galt, California, Chris attended Lodi Academy and Pacific Union College, Angwin, California. He taught music two years at Pacific Union College Preparatory School; one year at Fresno Adventist Academy, and five years in the Garden Grove Unified School District. He has studied at the graduate level at Cal State Fullerton. He has studied voice with J. Susan Brenner. He has performed in and been Music Director of Local Musical Theater. Chris has been Director of Music at St. Paul for more than 30 years. If you haven't seen this man perform, you have missed something special. Chris loves what he does... and it shows! Isabel Cazares was born in Mazatlan, Mexico. She has worked s a Parish Secretary and Parish Administrator for over 20 years where she found her passion to serve the people and community. Isabel is also a Certified Life Coach by the ELCA. In her spare time, Isabel serves a Loan Signing Notary. She has one daughter, Sophia, in college. She enjoys the beach, listening to live jazz music, and the arts. From helping in the children's ministry to greeting newcomers as they arrive at the front doors, serving at St. Paul Church is a great way to help make this church your home and deepen your relationship with Christ.  The church is organized into seven Core Ministries; you don’t need to be a member of the church to participate in a ministry. Meets on Tuesdays at 10 a.m. in the Parish Hall. A study of the Books of the Bible Characters. Learning, Fellowship, Fun (lively discussions), sharing prayer concerns and supporting each other. Coffee and Treats! Men's Bible Study - The Men's Bible meets on Thursday evening from 7 - 8 p.m. Since the pandemic, it has been led over Zoom but can be in-person as well. We believe that kids have the capacity to walk intimately with God, and we love to see them learn about Him and connect with Him through Bible stories, songs, and crafts. St. Paul's Youth Ministry programming for elementary age children is called SPY Lites! The goal of SPY-Lites is to provide opportunity for the children to play, to craft, to study, to serve, to visit and to explore God's world together through the eyes of Christian faith. Occasional outings have featured trips for Ice Skating, Mini-Golf and other fun group activities as well as yearly Christmas Caroling to homes or a local care-giving facility. (For events away from the church, children third grade and older may participate "on their own" with the completion of Parent Permission and Health Forms; children younger than third grade must have a parent accompany them. ) We meet on Sunday mornings from 9:45 - 10:30 a.m. - following the children's message in worship - and encourage all Pre-School through upper elementary youth and their families to join us every Sunday for music, learning and fun. Our Bible Sunday School curriculum is designed to help motivate and inspire our children to learn the bible and follow the word of God through the age appropriate lessons! We believe that Youth have the capacity to walk intimately with God, and we love to see them learn about Him and connect with Him through relevant discussions, worship participation, prayer, and fellowship. St. Paul Youth Ministry for Senior High Youth meet for relevant discussion and staying connected. Our Junior High Youth participate in Worship on Sunday mornings, helping lead as Acolytes, reading Scripture lessons, prayers, and other responsibilities. Join us for SPY Lite events every first Sunday of the month for fellowship and family fun! All ages welcomed! **Junior High and Senior High School youth are invited to participate in VBS as volunteers!** Faith - Religious Education - Confirmation Classes are held the 2nd and 4th Sundays of the month from 11:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. Please see Pastor Nate if your child is in the 7th or 8th grade. St. Paul Chancel Choir meets periodically throughout the year to sing classical arrangements for special events such as our Cantata worship during Advent, Christmas Eve, and during Holy Week leading up to Easter. Please contact Chris Winn or the Church office for more information and to be involved. During the Sunday morning service in the Sanctuary, a team of sound and media ministers are working behind the scenes to ensure that all the messages are communicated well to the church body: from the sermon lessons to the music, to the scripture readings for the day, to the announcements for the week. Our sound ministers run the soundboard and oversee all the necessary connections required to make the sound effective. The media ministers run the SundayPlus computer program during services to give a visual effect to all components of the worship service, and we have a crew that rotates running the livestream of our worship on Facebook live. To jump start this effort, a Hispanic Worship Expressions Ministry team has been started of which we are proud to be a part of. As we progress through ministry development, we plan on continuing to celebrate Hispanic cultural event including an annual La Posada fiesta following our Living Nativity in December and an Epiphany event where we cut the traditional Rosca de Reyes (King's Cake) in which are hidden little baby Jesus figurines; whoever gets the figurines will then bring Tamales to a fellowship time in February. We will continue to plan events that connect us and our local community to Hispanic culture including music, food, and more, and making use of bilingual publications and marketing. Through these events and promotions, we hope to grow in our openness to inclusion and diversity. With God's guidance we think that in the future we may be called to start a Bible Study and Worship service in Spanish to further share the Good News of Jesus Christ in our community. This worship is meant to be a space that is free of judgement. Our goal is to invite newcomers who are seeking something greater than themselves. To share a faith that can provide hope, a sense of purpose, and sense of belonging. "Gospel Brew" is especially aiming to bring young adults into the Church. Our hope is that those who are unchurched, can find St. Paul to be a faith community that is welcoming and representing God's unconditional love. "Gospel Brew" will be less formal in the sense of being less liturgical and more conversation based. Together we sing worship music, have communion, engage in different activities and share the Gospel! We wish for this community of faith to be a place where newcomers can learn, grow, ask questions and find comfort. Church is meant to be a place where people come together as a community, find purpose in our lives as Children of God.
